BetterHelp paid $7.8 million in FTC settlements in 2023 for sharing therapy users' mental health data with Facebook and Snapchat for advertising — and in May 2024, 800,000 affected customers received refund checks averaging under $10 each. The FTC's 2024 Health Breach Notification Rule update explicitly classified sharing health data with advertisers as an unauthorized disclosure.
